- This branch of the family were Quakers. An arrest warrant was issued in 1661 for Mary's father Robert Cowling "of North Otteram". Her parents were married September 8, 1686 in Halifax, Yorkshire. Her father died January 7, 1708/9 "Robert Cowling 83 years, Northowram".
- Her mother Martha died June 27, 1744 Folly Hall, Northowram, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of Jeremy Hilhouse (aka Jeremy Hillas, Jeremiah Hillas, Jeremie Hillhouse, etc). He was born about 1630 and was excommunicated in Sept 1682. He died at Knaresborough July 11, 1702, buried at Asquith.
