- His father's name was thought to be Robert for some time, at least as far back as 1869 in the comprehensive book on the family was published. However, a 1637 deposition made by Edward, age 52 names his father as Edward.
- Edward, yeoman, with his family, came to New England in 1638 aboard the "Diligent". His estate was granted to his widow Mary.
- He was an ancestor of Gerald Ford; and his sister Bridget was an ancestor of Abraham Lincoln.
- His grandfather was also named Edward Gilman. This Edward married Rose Rysse in Norfolk, England June 22, 1550.
