-Obituary :
One of the gentlest of lives went out yesterday afternoon when Mrs. Margaret West, wife of John A. West, deputy county clerk, drew her expiring breath at her home, 1308 Knoxille Avenue, at the age of seventy-eight years.
Mrs. West, whose maiden name was Margaret McMillan, was born in York, Livingston county, New York, and was given the benefit of a finished education. After passing through the county schools she graduated from the University at Ingham, Leroy, New York, and was subsequently appointed one of the instructors in painting at that institution and remained in that capacity until 1863, when she came to Illinois and taught painting and mathematics in what is now St. Mary's academy, Knoxville. She was married there is 1865 and in the following year came to Peoria and lived here for the remainder of her life. In the list of her refinements and attainments was an aptitude for art, a talentwhich has been inherited by her daughter Mrs. Margaret West Kinney, now of New York, and who with her husband, Troy Kinney, are foremost in the ranks of book illustrators in color, a department of art in which they were the pioneers. Mrs. West was a devout member of the Congregationalist church, and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends.
She is survived by her husband, two sons, and one daughter, Ralph and John A. West, Jr., and Mrs. Margaret West Kinney. The funeral will take place from the family residence 1308 Knoxville avenue, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock and her remains will be interred at Springdale Cemetery. - Peoria Star 10/16/1912
