-The names of Alexander's parents come from his death certificate. His parents were married in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland, and there is a Daniel MacFarlane and Jean Cummings who gave birth to a John MacFarlane in that same place in 1798, so this could possibly be the same person.
-There is no sign of John MacFarlane in any US Census, even though Alexander supposedly came over from Scotland around 1840 or sooner. There is a death listed in Paterson, NJ on Sept 1, 1832 of a John McFarland who died of Typhus Fever. Could this be him ?
