Notes:
-Immigrated from Scotland as a very young child. Perhaps around one year old. It is unknown if his father made the trip to the US with him and his mother. His parents names are known from Alexander's death certificate, and Alexander's granddaughter claimed he came from Perth, although there is a marriage record for John MacFarlane and Margaret Steel in 1836 in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland, which is quite far from Perth. There is no record of Alexander in the US until his wedding in 1869, six months before the birth of his son Edwin. In 1870 and 1880 he is listed as the foreman of a cotton mill, and living in Paterson. On the 1930 Census, he lists he gained his citizenship in 1866. In the 1890/1891 Paterson Directory, he lists his profession as "Carder". In his later years, he resided at Holland Home for the aged. In his 92nd year, he was sued by his 2nd wife for support whom he hadn't had contact with in the 25 previous years. See article transcript here. His 2nd wife was Carrie Newell whom he married June 25, 1881 when his first wife died.
-Religion: Presbyterian
-Supposedly had a strong brogue, and was very particular of people spelling his name MACfarland, and not MCFarland.
