-John West was an Innkeeper who lived in Enfield in Clayton-le-Moors in Lancashire, England. For a time, he lived at Mitton Hall, and was the place's custodian while the titled family was away on the continent. In 1808 his son Ward West was left 100 quid in someone's will. Don't yet know who it was who left him this large sum of money. He later moved to Bradford, Yorks, England. Th 1851 Census he is residing in Bradford with his son John, and his birthplace is listed as Enfield, Lancashire.
- His wife's name has long been recorded as Janet McMillan. This is almost certainly an error made by the book "Compendium of American Genealogy" which gives an individual the same great grandparents, repeated. The name in the baptism registers is simply "Jane", and a marriage to Jane Ward is in the York registers. She died November 23, 1831 in Yorkshire.
